Eligibility Criteria

​

Primary Residence – first, your property must be your year-round primary residence and must be at least one year old.

​

Income Requirements – the adults living in your home must have a combined pre-tax annual income that meets certain thresholds. Here’s a breakdown of the income levels based on the number of people in your home:

Please note that Income Level 3 only applies to homes that are switching from natural gas, propane, or oil.

 

1. Property Value: for income levels 1 and 2, your property must have a total assessed value under $1,230,000 as listed by BC Assessment. If your home’s value is higher than that, you may still qualify under Income Level 3.

2. Utility Accounts: you must have a residential utility account with FortisBC, BC Hydro, or a local municipal utility.

​

3. Eligible Homes:

  • Single-family homes

  • Secondary suites in single-family homes that have separate utility meters

  •  Permanently fixed mobile homes that have full plumbing, heating, electrical, and sewer connections

  • Duplexes, triplexes, row homes, or townhomes that have individual gas and electricity meters.

Heat Pump Grant is Available Until Funds Are Depleted!

The Grant has approximately $150 Million of Government funding and can cover upto 100% of your new heat pump and install including electrical upgrades.

Additional Requirements

​

The additional requirements include:

  • Rental Homes: renters will need a consent form from their landlord.

  • Energy Utility Bills: bills must be in the name of the homeowner or resident, not a strata corporation or landlord.

  • Pre-Registration: you can pre-register and obtain eligibility codes before upgrading.

BC Hydro Condo & Apartment Rebate Program

Upgrade to energy-efficient heating and cooling with BC Hydro's Condo and Apartment Rebate. This program offers up to $8,500 to help residents of multi-unit buildings switch to electric heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, which are two to three times more efficient than traditional systems. These upgrades can significantly lower energy costs and reduce environmental impact.

Key Highlights:

  • Up to $5,000 for heat pump systems and $3,500 for heat pump water heaters, based on household income.

  • Available to BC Hydro customers living in eligible multi-family buildings, such as low-rise apartments, multiplexes, or townhomes.

  • All upgrades must be installed by registered contractors from BC Hydro’s approved list.

  • Applications must be submitted within six months of the invoice date.

  • The program is funded by BC Hydro and the Province of BC.

Eligibility:

  • Homes must be year-round primary residences, at least 12 months old.

  • Located in eligible building types with shared common areas or no internal shared corridors.

  • Maximum assessed value of $772,000.

  • Must have an active utility account in your name.

  • Heating system must be primarily electric and capable of heating at least 50% of your home.

Upgrade Requirements:

  • New heat pumps must meet efficiency standards (SEER ≥ 16, HSPF ≥ 10, or equivalent).

  • Systems must replace existing electric resistance heating.

  • Heat pumps should be size-appropriate, capable of providing all heat down to -5°C.

Application Process:

  • Pre-register and obtain an eligibility code before upgrades.

  • Hire a registered contractor for installation.

  • Submit application and supporting documents within six months of the invoice.

FortisBC Rebate Program for Dual Fuel Heating Systems

Upgrade your old gas furnace with a new, eligible high-efficiency dual fuel heating system (electric heat pump combined with a gas furnace) and take advantage of a FortisBC rebate of $5,000*. Installing a dual fuel heating system is an option for customers who are looking to help reduce their energy use and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

How to Apply

  1. Purchase a qualifying air source heat pump and efficient gas furnace through a licensed contractor registered with the Home Performance Contractor Network.

  2. Have the systems professionally installed.

  3. Complete the application form within six months of the invoice date, including:

    • Your FortisBC gas account number.

    • Your email address.

    • A scanned copy of the paid invoice.

    • Heat load calculation and commissioning sheet provided by your contractor.

    • Photos of the two-pipe direct vent system (if requested).
